Jenifa Mayanja’s unique artistic vision and spirited trademark dj sound are reflective of her exposure to a variety of musical sounds since childhood in her native country, Uganda. Surrounded by soukous, reggae, native African rhythms and disco music, Jenifa embarked upon a musical career at a young age singing in local choirs. Many years later following a move to the United States in the mid-eighties, she discovered a talent for playing music as a dj and began her professional career in 1992. Jenifa quickly established a reputation as a dj with a distinctive and impeccable music selection.
Relocating to New York in 1995 helped solidify this reputation as more gigs/offers were offered at numerous major club venues/lounges. A position at the record store Dance Tracks and their label Spiritual Life Music enabled her to expand her musical knowledge while gaining experience in the music business. Jenifa soon became a mainstay in the New York house scene. She became a regular guest at Body and Soul with Francois K, Joe Claussell, and Danny Krivit, was a guest dj at Club Shelter Timmy Regisfords legendary residency, and has appeared as opening dj for Brooklyn Funk Essentials at SOBs, and at Giant Steps PS.1 summer dance music events.
On the airwaves she has played on WBAI FM with Jeannie Hopper and WNYU FM with Cosmo. Along with playing throughout the United States and Canada, Jenifa co-launched several parties over the years, the most notable being, Hamsa featured in Time Out NY as one of the best parties in New York and also in the Village Voice. She was named as one of the top five djs to watch in Jockey Slut magazine a leading dance music publication, and has also been talked about in Black Book, Billboard, DMA(dance music authority), Straight No Chaser magazine, and Time Out NY.
Recently she has appeared at Deep See with Lola and E-man, Alma NYC with DJ True, and at Club Element in the Vault.
Not content to only play records Jenifa made a return to her original musical roots writing songs, producing and singing for the past three years. Developing her chops as a producer/songwriter she, along with fellow producer, Vicki Bell of Hipbone Recordings, released two singles on Quiet Riot records in the UK. One a song written for legendary club diva, Alexis P. Suter. Both songs were also released on the Bonafide album and licensed to Chilli Funk records UK. Descendants was another project released on Clairaudience records on which she appeared as co-producer/singer along with producer, Anthony Nicholson of Clairaudience Records/Trackmode. One of her forthcoming original productions featuring Alison Crockett (Sylk 130, US 3) is to be released on Lifeline records in Japan.
After taking a hiatus from the music business in 2004, Jenifa will return with a full length player to be released entiled "Stream of Consciousness" in spring 2006 on the Bu-mako label. The album brings together an electronic blend of many underground genres of music and promises to cause quite a stir to the discerning ear.
